Nothing teaches us about ourselves more completely and succinctly than an adventure. In this video, two parents, Maxwell and Allison, tell us all about it.

Maxwell Lawson: One thing I’ve seen at Adventures on the Gorge, there’s so many different ages and so many different walks of life.

Allison Leedy: I’ve brought many different people. Most recently we’ve started bringing my children. We do the Upper New trip.

Maxwell: I come with my family. We try to get together and enjoy the TimberTrek.

Allison: I definitely think that the Upper New is way more than just a fun time for kids. They have to learn to work together in order to get themselves down the river. It’s a shared experience with their friends and our family, and something that they can talk about for…ever really.

Maxwell: My son, Maxwell Jr., he was going across an obstacle and he just froze up, but he pushed himself through it! It was a moment for him to overcome one of his fears of that height.

Allison: It started out as really a love for the excitement, and over the years has really grown into a real respect for the river and the experiences that we have when we’re there.

Maxwell: He never talked about being afraid, though. He always talks about how much fun he has. So it was an awesome experience for him. And, it was an awesome experience for myself, as well, as a parent.

Allison: Most recently, my absolute favorite memory was taking my oldest son, Jake down the Lower New River, and being able to watch him experience what I’ve experienced over so many years.

Maxwell: I think those type of adventures allow children to break through their limitations, in which they believe they may have, and explore a little deeper into, you know, finding the confidence in themself that they wouldn’t have found if they were, you know, just sitting at home or just watching television or playing a video game.
