Raise your hand if when you learned anatomy you didn’t think the platysma was significant? ‍♀️⁣⁣
⁣⁣
It was the face shaving muscle. Move on to the more important muscles! Amiright?! ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Let’s change that! 1st of all- it is innervated by a cranial nerve! CN 7 (facial) to be exact. Yep- another neck muscle innervated by a cranial nerve. (Just like the upper trap) ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Why does this matter? Because when we can effect the cranial nerves we can effect the queen bee of the body the ! ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
The neck is a very important container, like the abdomen the role of the muscles on the outside of the container are very important! It’s like the platysma is the abdominals and the upper trap is the lumbodorsal fascia. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
In the contractile field model (@phillipbeachcf) the playtsma is a core container muscle. This core container is called the radial field. You can even feel and observe the role of the platysma in the core. Activate it by making one of these smiles . (Close your mouth and depress the corners of your mouth or jut out your chin a bit.) You can almost instantly feel this connection into your core via an increase in IAP. You can also observe this action when lifting heavy things.⁣
⁣⁣
Next time your back isn’t feeling great, stretch out or activate the playtsma and feel the back ache dissipate.⁣
⁣⁣
Things that cause this muscle to be “tight” are lymph congestion, forward head posture, (looking at phones and screens all the time), poor core control and gut health, stress breathing, high stress, etc.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Here’s a stretch I have been doing that makes all the things in my body feel so much better.⁣
⁣⁣
Use you hands to create a little downward stretch on your skin just below your clavicles and the move your head into extension with the mouth closed, once you feel a good line of stretch hold and change vectors and intensity by moving your jaw and head. No rules, listen to your body and follow the lead.⁣⁣
