IMPORTANT NOTE IN ORDER TO APPRECIATE WHAT THE ACTORS ACCOMPLISHED: THE ACTORS ARE SPEAKING ALL THE WORDS YOU HEAR, LIVE AND VISIBLE, AS THEY ARE ACTING. THEY ACT OUT THE GESTURES OF A SECOND DIALOGUE SILENTLY, SIMULTANEOUSLY, AS THEY SPEAK. NOTHING IS HIDDEN OR ADDED AFTERWARDS - ALL THE VOICES COME FROM THE ACTORS AS YOU ARE WATCHING THEM. THERE ARE NO ELECTRONICS OR OFFSTAGE VOICES, EVERYTHING IS LIVE ACTION.

Video Sample: Banquet of the Wardens

The video sample uses our technique of “speech duality” to maintain two dialogues simultaneously – one that is performed through the silent speech gestures and movements of the actors (their visible engagement), and one that is performed through the voices of the actors (their audible engagement). Two plots are performed at the same time in this experiment. Plot A = What the visible characters look like they are saying and doing. Plot B = What the audible characters sound like they are saying and doing. These are the simultaneous realities of the actors as they act. “Speech duality” is one technique of a network of techniques we call “counter-natural behavior.”

This is a work among an evening of works called "Quintets for a Quartet" leading into work on "Folding Time: an Origami of the Everyday" as a laboratory development for new techniques emerging from ideas, writing and direction of Lisa Fay and Jeff Glassman. For "Quintets," collaboration, insights for implementation, and performances by Yael Beretta, Brook Celeste, Julie Williams, Austin McCann and Keith McKenney began during a 9-week period of intense work during April and May of 2014 using space at the SoDo Theatre in downtown Champaign, Illinois. The first performances took place 6 times at the Herbert Brün House on Franklin St. in Urbana, Illinois during May 28 - June 1, 2014 with one more performance on June 8, 2014 at THE PROP THTR on Elston Ave. in Chicago. Further work was done on the piece in January and February 2015, and it was performed twice more in the Rhino Festival, PROP THTR, Chicago on February 21 and 22, 2015.

This project was supported in part by the Illinois Arts Council Agency
