Meet young climate activist Greta Thunberg, scolding world leaders for their inaction at the U.N. summit in December 2018. Greta is one of the heroes in The Dreamer, my new series of illuminated video sculptures. Her face is rear-projected on a translucent mask, which brings her to life as if she was right in front of us.
Greta Thunberg has made international headlines since launching a school strike against climate change in her home country of Sweden earlier this year. Every Friday, she protests outside the parliament building in Stockholm instead of attending school, and her actions have inspired thousands of students across the globe to do the same.
My goal for The Dreamer is to make us more aware of characters and ideas that can change the way we perceive the world and engage us to take action. We will present The Dreamer in a kiosk at art exhibits, as well as in the Time Machine we are building at Pataphysical Studios.
I have been prototyping The Dreamer for six months now, and this interactive art project is coming along well. But we still have some challenges to overcome: it’s hard to maintain the illusion that the Dreamer is a real person when talking heads move in and out of the mask. I spent almost a day trying to stabilize Greta’s face in the video of her UN speech, and she still moves out of frame every few seconds. So working off existing video footage may be difficult.
Next I plan to explore other ways to bring Dreamers to life: 1) by shooting original footage with live actors; and 2) by animating still photos of characters looking at the camera, with facial expressions created in Photoshop and synchronized with voice recordings.
