This is a 30-second video from me (Mike Strong) very, very briefly encapsulating the knowledge of video editing Billie brought to me in editing for dance, and then as a combination of that editing knowledge from and taking tap lessons from Billie which turned out, to my surprise, that I had shifted in my sensory equipment, hearing, sight and body sense in a way that my still photography made a quantum jump (sudden change in position, with no intervening ramp up to get there) to shooting on the count.
To elaborate on the shooting on the count, because there was no time in 30 seconds, before the tap lessons I viewed a VHS copy of That's Entertainment with the Gene Kelly "Singing in the Rain" number. It was not intentional, just whim. In the lessons I expected to learn steps, to dance tap. Well, that was pretty basic. But, I had a surprise coming. Once again, just whimsy, just chance, I picked up that VHS tape again and played it. Only -- THIS TIME I heard the steps with clarity, I heard the delicacy in the tones of each tap and I saw how Gene Kelley's feet moved. I had never experienced dance that way before. I was suddenly wide awake with the realization that I could have watched all the dance movies in the world for years and not gotten the awareness that one session of very basic tap lessons gave to me. It wasn't the steps, it was the awareness that I gleaned. I also found, that suddenly my awareness in shooting dance had also taken a quantum leap. I could feel and see the difference immediately.
Because I was also involved in developing learning software (as a programmer) and was also teaching (as an adjunct) this realization directly affected my understanding of how we learn.
