The Bloom Network uses the current post-anthropogenic condition of Tokyo Bay to suggest a data-driven carbon-negative architectural future for our hyper-toxic cities. The project learns from the symbiosis and recursive growth and flow of carbon-sequestering lichen and detoxifying algal biomass, before suggesting how we can use a digital reinterpretation of this symbiosis to propose carbon-negative algal insurgence on an architectural scale.

Branching from Odaiba Island and reaching into Tokyo Bay, the Bloom Network aims to neutralise the toxicity of the waters of the city, removing the algal bloom and sequestering carbon throughout the capillary skin of the network, before contributing to the biopolymer research institute which it hosts. The biomass waste product from this material process then enters a cyclical ecology and contributes to the further growth of the network through its integration into biomaterials from which the building is grown.

A result of machine learning with natural algal flow patterns, the project explores how a data-driven system of complex algal capillary architectures can bloom de-carbonised microclimates and contribute to the end of toxicity. As such, the project further suggests a future condition for our cities, in which architectural interventions can utilise and ‘dream’ with existing carbon-centric city data using neural networks, be it population densities or municipal waste levels, to bloom insurgent carbon-negative fibrous algal circulatory systems,
bringing 'the end of Tok(C)City'.
