Blossom during COVID

I undertook this project towards the start of March when the impact of COVID19 was starting to make itself felt in the UK. Most of the filming took place during the period of mass-isolation. The camera was centred on one bud at the end of a branch on an old apple tree in my garden. Filming ended when the blossom heads dropped at the end of April. A combination of continuous filming is interspersed with single frames, stop-motion style, to disrupt the conventional smooth representation of the flow of time and provide a sense of trauma to the natural process (the Ancient Greeks called this phusis. Heidegger makes reference to this in The Question Concerning Technology (1954)). This edit is a mere 52 seconds to fit the requirements of Instagram. I will be setting up a multi-projector installation in my garden some point soon. This will involve projecting sections of the film on extended loops (up to 12m or so – thereby allowing me to show a lot more footage than the 52 seconds presented here) and throwing the images onto a range of surfaces.
