Kontexts was a magazine of concrete and experimental poetry edited by Michael Gibbs. The typewriter art on the front cover is Amelia Etlinger´s, and the one at the back cover is Michael J. Phillips´s.
Michael Gibbs (1949-2009) was an english artist, poet, performer, publisher, internet pioneer and art critic. He was a pioneer in the field of visual poetry in England, He initially studied English literature in England and from 1968 he was active in the Fluxus Movement. During his studies he involves with Beau Geste Press in the early 1970s and started making his artist’s magazine “Kontexts”, in which he published interviews with William Burroughs and Brion Gysin, among others. From 1974 he moved to Amsterdam where he continued to work with experimental poetry and text, publishing, performance and installation. During the 1990s he developed ideas and formats for the web, launching the website Whynotsneeze? in 1996, “a site for critical art on and about the internet”, and continued to write commentaries and criticism up to his death in 2009
Beau geste Press was a community of duplicators producing mimeo materpieces and books by artists/writers including Carolee Schneemann, Opal Nations, David Mayor, Felipe Ehrenberg, etc. Also an experimental arts mag: Schmuck. Cullompton, Devon.
