Lauren deSerres creates narrative imagery using bright, saturated colors and patterns made with layers of acrylic paint, pastel, collage and ink. She enjoys making people smile with my work, and also strives to show the importance of appreciating and conserving our natural world through storytelling and whimsy.

Lauren is based at her home studio, Proud Chicken Studio, located in Pittsboro, North Carolina. She holds an MFA from the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth and a BFA from East Carolina University with a focus in sculpture. Lauren has been painting since she was 15 and has been an art educator for over 10 years.

Lauren’s training is in sculpture, although she currently works two- dimensionally. She enjoys the tactile quality of mixed media and loves to build up layers in her work. In her early works, Lauren’s imagery explored light hearted imagery inspired by her home state of North Carolina. She painted garden scenes, bluegrass playing animals, and pollinator insects.

Her most recent series, "Night Time Series” is a journey through the subconscious. She uses animal guides and medicinal plants to tell a story of awakening and rebirth, reflective of her own experience as a woman and an artist. Her technique consists of many processes and layers. These processes encourage the viewer to look closely at the work, gradually unveiling hidden nuances and details, both in technique and in the stories.

Lauren’s work deals strongly with the rapidly changing world. Through imagery like animal talismans, dreamscape and fantasy, Lauren encourages her viewer to look closely at what they see in themselves to find solutions that bring us together for positive global change.
