Sun is pouring through the window as Alex Olive sparkles in it’s light. Olive, a junior at Westminster College is captain of the cheer team. Olive isn’t your typical college athlete. His current position isn’t something he had dreamed of when he was younger. Actually, it was birthed from boredom. Last year Olive spontaneously decided to join the cheer with zero experience. Through his hard work and determination, Olive gained skill and a leadership position on his team.
Joining the cheer team wasn’t everything Olive expected. In fact, he says he likes it more than his initial assumptions about the sport. Olive thought he would just have to flip around and cheer at sporting events hosted at Westminster College. He did not realize he would spend hours in the gym outside of designated practice time every week. Between conditioning, learning new skills, and planning choreography, Olive says he spends at least 20 hours every week on his sport.
“He does work extremely hard” says sophomore and co-captain Maddie Bernasek. “It’s honestly so like, almost shocking, how fast he improved. It just goes to show you that anything can be accomplished with hard work”
After his first month, Olive could throw a standing back tuck. However, learning new skills wouldn’t be the only thing he needed to overcome. Olive was facing a new plethora of hurtful stereotypes. Either against him personally or about the sport in general, others weren’t afraid to share their opinions. Assumptions about himself were uncomfortable to face, but Olive remained focused in what he wanted to do.
Olive points out that despite what others may think about you, the way you view yourself can give you limitless opportunities. Leave the excuses at the door and be ready to work. Your commitment can take you farther than you. Maybe takeaway as well that it isn’t always a bad thing to be bored. The ideas you conceive could lead you to your next adventure.
Q: Can you introduce yourself using your name and preferred pronouns?
A: my name is Alexander Olive and I use pronouns he, him, his.
Q Why did you decided to join the cheer team?
A: My sophomore year I just bored and I wanted to try something new.
Q: Is it what you expected?
A: It isn’t what I expected but I like it better. It requires a lot of mental endurance and I enjoy that aspect of the sport a lot.
Q: What do you enjoy most about cheer?
A: Probably overcoming those mental barriers, it’s really rewarding.
Q: What is something about cheer that you don’t enjoy as much?
A: Definitely all the stigma around the sport and specifically being a male cheerleader. If guys could get out of their comfort zones, we could have a great team here at Westminster.
Q: What is something cheer has taught you?
A: I’ve learned that attitude is everything. Before every practice we have to run a mile and some days it is the best mile of my life and other days it is the worst. It all just depends on my outlook of getting out of bed that day.
Q: Anything new cheer has brought to your life?
A: Yeah, I’ve made some new friends. I got to go to Florida last year to compete which was cool.
Q: Is there anything else you would like to add?
A: I would want people to know that if they’re going to try something new, especially something as drastic as joining a new sport, you need to be ready to commit. You could really be hurting but if you’re focused and your attitude is right you can really do anything.
Q: Awesome. Thank you for your time that was very insightful
A: Thank you.
