FROM NOISE explores the value of noise. With this work Cem and Wessel create an audiovisual sculpture of countless noise frequencies.

Originally noise as an acoustic phenomenon referred to disorganized sound - the rustling of wind, rain, murmurings. Many elements that merge into a larger whole.

In colloquial language, noise often takes on a negative meaning. Noise on the line. Disturbance. The related word 'rusk' in Norwegian literally means waste. The English word noise is thought to come from the Latin 'nausea': seasickness. It apparently makes us uncomfortable. In communication and science we consider unwanted variation and inefficiency to be noise. That which falls outside of our expectation of value.

In an age that is heavily defined by information flows, this concept is increasingly relevant. After all, we are selective in what we consider to be noise. Our brains unconsciously filter out relevant and irrelevant information to save energy. Blind spots we fill in according to what we think we know. When there are random or too many signals, this process is disrupted. We feel discomfort, because our frame of reference loses it’s grip.

But losing grip also creates space for renewal. What happens if you embrace the noise? Cem and Wessel use noise as a building block in their work and construct an abstract landscape in which an in-between language emerges that combines the digital and the human. A shared reflective space where the spectator is invited to surrender to the disruptive nature of noise.
