TRANSCRIPT:
Located between the snow-peaked Cascade Mountain Range to the east and the ruggedly beautiful Pacific Coastal Range to the west, Portland, Oregon is known as one of the greenest cities in the world because of its walking, jogging, bicycling, clean public transportation, community gardens, farmers’ markets, and more than ten thousand acres of public parks.

Portland General Electric covers 4,000 square miles serving 800,000 customers with a diverse, reliable supply of electricity. And the newest source is Unit 2 at the Port Westward Power Plant on the Columbia River.

RICK TETZLOFF:
The specific goals of the Port Westward Unit 2 project include providing highly flexible generation both for peaking service, for load following service, and most importantly at this stage for wind integration service. So with our renewable portfolio increasing over time, we need to have more flexible resources like Port Westward Unit 2 in our system to keep things stable and reliable.

MIKE DWYER:
The ability to blend in the environmental response and the environmental cleanliness of wind generated power or solar generated power with the high reliability and the high availability of natural gas in about the most efficient way that you can get the two to combine.

RICK TETZLOFF:
PGE and Black & Veatch chose Wartsila’s technology for this project because they provide the flexibility and the efficient engine that we need to integrate and follow wind in the northwest.

MIKE DWYER:
And it’s all controlled by a single control room; over 600 megawatts of the most efficient power in the region. And when you combine the high efficiency of the Port Westward Unit 1 with the excellent response and efficiency of Port Westward Unit 2, the combination is just about the best of all worlds.

CHUCK MITCHELL:
Port Westward Unit 2 is a great example of a utility incorporating its renewable portfolio while maintaining safe, reliable, and very, very economical power delivery to its customers.

Black & Veatch is building more than just the infrastructure that brings energy to people everywhere. We are Building a World of Difference.
