Just across the street from O’Connell and Langdon Hall, the buzz of construction can be heard, as a brand new building takes shape.

Jason Bilinski, Project Manager, “This project we broke ground here on May 21st of 2018, and right now we will be wrapping up on August 3rd of 2020.

The project is being handled by DPR Construction, a company based out of Redwood City in the Bay Area, yet this build itself has a very local feel to it, that’s because three of the guys in charge, Project Manager Jason Bilinski, and Project Engineers Daniel Bailey and Nathan Hill, all graduated from the Construction Management program here at Chico State.

Daniel Bailey, “Everyday when I walk home from work here and head over to my truck, I walk by Langdon Hall, and kind of stand there and look back at the new building that we’re building now and look at the building that I was taking most of my classes in.”

Nathan Hill, “It’s really a blessing to be able to come to my hometown and put a building on the campus that I graduated from, in a town that I grew up in. I would’ve never thought in a million years that it would actually happen.”

But it is happening, as these three pour hours into this massive state of the art building.

Bilinski, “This is a four story, 110,000 square foot science building. It’s gonna house the Physical Science program, so it’s a lot of collaborative areas, a lot of windows and portals into classrooms and labs, so science on display type theme.”

Obviously a project of this magnitude brings with it plenty of complications, but this group is handling them each as they come.

Hill, “This is a design build project, so what that means is you’re kind of designing as you’re going, and so you get drawings at about 50 percent completion and have to basically turn them into 100 percent completion. We do model coordination, but even though when you put things together in a model you know, when you’re trying to put it out here in the field, that’s when it kind of becomes a little bit problematic and you run into issues, or just need to tie up little loose ends. You have to kind of make that on the spot decision and be able to sleep at night and be okay with it.”

And the education they received right here on campus is a big reason why, they’re in the position, to make those calls.

Bailey, “Chico does a great job, especially their Construction Management, making sure that their curriculum is top of the line, and all the job opportunities and internships here at Chico with the Presessions and interviews every semester, there’s tons of opportunities for jobs after you graduate.”

And these three are living proof, of just that.
