To my UNCP students, congratulations.
We’ve made it through our first week but, despite a successful start, I realize there’re still questions about what lies ahead. Please know our first priority has been, and will continue to be, your health and your safety.

Many of you have legitimate questions regarding housing and meal plan reimbursement. I know this is of great importance and I assure you, we are working closely with the UNC System office and we’ll have an answer and guidance very soon,

To our graduating seniors, the class of 2020, as communicated in the email earlier today, we’ve reluctantly decided to postpone your Commencement service to August 7th for our Graduate School, and August 8th for our undergraduate ceremony. Given the present circumstances, we believe there is no other option than to postpone but you will have a ceremony and we will celebrate your accomplishment. Commencement is one of the most beloved traditions on our campus and changing our plans in any way is a decision we did not take lightly.

For some of you, your education has been interrupted with two devastating hurricanes and, now, COVID-19. Believe me when I say, this university is committed to ensuring you have the opportunity to celebrate the diploma that you’ve earned.

The circumstances you’re facing are challenging but you have faculty, you have staff, that are on your side and they’re totally dedicated to your success. In the past two weeks, they have put in an incredible amount of work to figure out ways they can best help you adjust, and to continue your education through these times.

Be patient. Let’s support each other. Know everyone around you is also experiencing the same challenge, and the same struggle. We are in this together.

Throughout your life, you’re going to face hurdles and unavoidable obstacles but you can never let present circumstances cause you to lose sight of your goals, your plans, your passions. It’s that resilience, that determination, that sheer will-power to push through that will define you.

And there is strength in recognizing the need for support. I encourage you, lean on each other and lean on us. If you need help, ask. We’re here and we’re ready to assist.

As we continue through this journey, it may not be easy, and it may take time to figure out the answers, but through all the changes and all the uncertainty, we are still BraveNation. We have proven our resilience more than once.

This is yet another test of our character as a university and you, as a person. We will get through this together and, again, we will emerge stronger than before.

We’re responding to the present. We’re preparing for the future.
