A good jab is the key to good boxing, and it will become your number one weapon. So, what is a jab? Your jab is a straight punch with your front hand. You can use a jab strategically to create and set up an offensive attack, OR You can use the jab defensively to keep your opponent out of range, off-balance and distracted. If thrown with the correct form and technique, of all the punches, a jab will leave you the least exposed to be countered. That’s why they say “the jab is a blind man’s cane” because the jab is your range finder. It helps you determine whether or not your opponent is within striking distance. There are three different types of jabs, but they all start from that same turtle shell position we learned in our last session.
First is the Stationary Jab. Make a fist, extend your front arm forward while rotating your wrist. So it’s thumbs up for defense to protect your chin, but it’s thumbs down for offense when you jab. Here’s your stationary jab checkpoint. Back fist protects the jaw. Your chin stays down always. Your arm is fully extended. The first point of contact should be your two front big knuckles – the index and middle knuckle. And your front shoulder will come to your chin. Make sure, the chin and head do not move to the shoulder, but instead your shoulder rises to protect your chin. Whether the punch lands or not, you immediately return to your turtle shell position.
Second is the Power Jab, where you push off the back foot to take a quick, small step closer to your opponent. This time, you step forward with only the front foot while you jab. Here’s your Power Jab checkpoint. You are pushing off the backfoot. Back fist protects the jaw. Chin down. Front arm is fully extended. Two front big knuckles are the first points of contact. Front shoulder comes up to protect the chin. And your front foot should land at the same time as your jab.
After you throw the Power Jab, quickly step back and return to turtle shell position. Remember that although you push off the back foot for power, the back foot does not advance forward.
Third is a Forward Jab. Use the back foot as a springboard to push off, as you jab and step forward with the front foot. Here’s your Forward Jab checkpoint. Push off the backfoot. Back fist up. Chin down. Front arm extended. Front first thumb down. Front shoulder comes up to protect the chin. And your front foot should land at the same time as your jab.
As the front fist recovers to the body, then the back foot advances forward. So, the entire body has moved a step forward as we return to our boxing stance.
Now we know how to throw Punch Number One – that’s the jab with your front hand. Let’s learn how to throw a punch with the back hand which is called Punch Number Two. Twist your back foot while digging your toes into the ground as if you’re squashing a bug. At the same time, twist your hips and torso toward your opponent.
Here’s your Number Two Checkpoint. Your back shoulder comes forward to protect the chin, while the back arm fully extends and the wrist rotates so your thumb is down at the point of contact. And all the while, your front fist is resting against the cheekbone for protection. Whether of not the punch lands, you twist back and return to turtle shell position.
There’s a reason why these punches are called the 1s and 2s. Because the shortest distance between you and your opponent is a straight line, the sweet science begins with these punches. Simply put, your 1s and 2s are the ABCs of boxing.
I know life is a fight, but now you’ve got people in your corner. Together, WE are ring of hope.
