If you can’t move, you can’t box, and if you can’t protect yourself, Boxing is going to hurt.
Let’s start with the proper boxing stance. Your feet are shoulder width apart. You’ve got a front foot and a back foot. I like to pretend that each foot is in a separate box. And the foot is cutting across that box diagonally. So you’re not standing on a tightrope with one foot directly behind the other, and your feet are not squared up flat side-by-side, but instead each foot runs corner to corner in its own imaginary box. The purpose of this stance is to maximize your balance and make yourself a smaller target for your opponent. Your front foot big toe is on an imaginary line with the heel of your back foot. Now that your feet are set, let’s move on to posture.
You want your front shoulder pointing forward toward your opponent. Your chin stays down, tilted toward your front shoulder. If your chin comes up, your opponent can land a punch, that may land you … on the canvas. So your chin always points down, but your eyes stay up, as if you are looking up through your eyebrows. Now get your hands up, making light fists, resting on your cheekbones. Relax your elbows against your ribcage, and keep your shoulders down low, not up high. This is called the turtle shell position because it is the safest way to block, slip, or step away from any punch thrown at you. Now, You’re ready to move safely.
Remember, as you stand on your line, your front shoulder is always pointing toward your opponent. Whichever direction you move, you need to step with that foot first. If you move right, step with the right foot first, and then follow with the left foot. This will bring you back to your proper boxing stance with feet shoulder width apart.
But, your power comes by pushing off the opposite foot. So when you step forward, push off the back foot. Wherever you step, do not ever – never cross your feet. The moment your feet cross, your balance is compromised and so is your ability to punch.
Now, this turtle shell position and movement might feel awkward at first, but it feels a lot better than getting hit in the face. And if boxing was easy, then everyone would do it. Here YOU are, learning a new skill: the sweet science, pugilism. And it’s gonna take time, hard work and dedication. You took the first step today, and that’s always the most difficult.
I know life is a fight, but now you’ve got people in your corner. Together, WE are ring of hope.
