[TRANSCRIPT:]

Hello! My name is Ashley Rodriguez. I grew up in Northern California, specifically in Fremont. And then later I moved to Southern California, which is where I am at now. I live in Ontario.

I started learning ASL by taking classes and all my teachers were deaf. So that was a huge benefit for me. I thought, “wow, I get to learn a new language AND provide access! This is amazing.” So, I decided to become an interpreter.

There are two main reasons why I decided to become an interpreter.
I remember watching a show, and off to the side I saw interpreters, and I thought, “wow, they were so good” and I thought, “hey, I have a background in theater. I could also become a performance interpreter.” And I did. Another reason that I wanted to become an interpreter was because you know that Deaf people have had a lack of access for a long time. We as hearing people have a privilege and every day we can swipe on our phone, we can watch the news, we can go out and listen to anything we want, and have no problems, but this is not the case for Deaf people. They constantly must fight for their access. So, this is why I think it's important for me to use my privilege and provide access.

I have been involved in different fields of interpreting. The first one is music and Theater, which is my favorite. The second one is community interpreting and the last one is college education.

My goal for interpreting is to take the BEI test. I also want to take the EIPA test. Thank you so much for watching. Bye!
