The Convergence of Data and Seaweed

The project is a prototype coastal environment that combines data storage, living, and seaweed farming. Located in an archipelago of islands in Clew Bay, it seeks to intertwine seaweed, technology, and living.

The research looks into seaweed as a crop and how it is grown. Many different products can then be produced; ranging from kelp noodles to animal feed and bio-fuel. Advances in technology have opened up the possibility of drones to assist in the growing and harvesting of these sea crops.

The project is orientated around life in the bay and the benefits of aquaculture. The site consists of two islands. One for seaweed processing and data, the other for housing. Seaweed and kelp are harvested, processed, and refined on-site. Food is sent to the people and the other biomass is refined into biofuel. This, along with energy from the tidal systems provides power to the data center. CO2 exhaust from utilizing bio-fuel is then sent back into the ocean to be absorbed by the seaweed. Micro-algae systems can also utilize excess CO2 when seaweed is not in season.

The data center is fragmented into long strips and embedded into the land. The housing island holds singular residences that are arranged in a sporadic way along perpendicular paths. Algae tubes line the roof and walls, creating clean energy. The benefit of living in one of these would be its access to open space and privacy while being part of a cooperative community.
