How to grow with Christ as Lord of your life and you as His disciple…6 disciplines you must develop as an individual…
1) Spend time every day in God’s Word – this is not just reading it but spending time to get to know Him. It’s not just His Word…it is His very life and breath given to us! Don’t pass that up!
2) Spend time every day in prayer and worship – this is not about singing songs all day or just making a wish list, rubbing the magic lamp and having a “genie” god fulfill your every desire…He loves you way too much to do that as most of our desires would ultimately destroy us…this is about getting to know Him, His love for you, and who you are in Christ. As you do you’ll be thanking and praising Him more and more!
3) Spend some time listening to God every day – this is combining your time in His Word and prayer in order to know and love Him more and allow Him to have His way in your life…that’s Lordship! You’ve got a Lord…do you know who it is? You may not always hear something but over time I promise you will and it will be very good…even when it’s tough! BTW – whatever you’re giving your time to every day is what is having its way in your life, revealing who’s your Lord/lord!
4) Spend some time thinking about what you read and pray about and what you’re thinking and hearing. Meditation not only calms your mind, when you are focusing on Christ and His Word, it also brings clarity, peace, direction and wisdom…how many of you would like that in your life?
5) Honor the Sabbath principle in your life…God really can do more in 7 days than you can do in a lifetime much less in the other 6 days in a week. Trust Him in this and He will multiply His work in and through you. Plus you will be much more rested and at peace. Gotta like that!
6) Fasting – I know, you’re saying, “What in the world?” This is powerful and takes time, like all disciplines, to develop. However, the maturing of self-control in, and relying on, The Holy Spirit in learning to say no to and die to self that comes from fasting, will have a tremendous impact on your spiritual life and the positive influence God uses you to have on others. One warning, unless God tells you to do so, don’t start with more than 1 or 2 days and then build up over time. You can also fast from things other than food as the discipline is learning to let go of those things we rely on in our natural flesh and learn to trust in The Holy Spirit for all we need.
All of these are personal spiritual disciplines of a disciple of Christ. Isn’t it interesting He didn’t command us to “go make zealots!” Passion alone will always lead to excess or burn out and neither is helpful in His Kingdom. He needs disciplined ones, i.e., disciples, and he will not force any of these. You choose to do them out of love. Next week we’ll look at corporate or community disciplines.
Thanks for joining us and for your prayers! Thanks always to The Lord! Make it a great day and God bless in Christ!
