VIDEO DESCRIPTION:
Play, download and edit the free video 5. Stay.
Goal: When you say “stay” your dog should stay in the position you left him in (sit, down, stand) until you release him.
Training Steps:
1. Choose to work on sit or down first.
2. Ask your dog to “sit” or “down” in front of you.
3. Wait 1-2 seconds, then click and treat. Don’t move! If your dog gets up, just try again.
4. Next wait 2-3 seconds to click/treat. Don’t move!
5. Now you can add “Stay”. Say “sit”, then say “stay”, then click/treat right away (as long as your dog didn’t move). Don’t move!
6. Repeat this one 5-6 times.
7. Then try to increase the time your dog stays. Work up to counting to 10 before you move during the stay.
8. Now you can begin to back up while your dog stays. Start with just ONE step. Don’t wait too long to click, just a few seconds.
9. Be sure to go back to your dog to give him the treat! This will keep him from getting confused with “come”.
10. Slowly add more steps until you can go to the end of the leash.
11. If at any time your dog gets up, gently take him back to where he was, ask him to “sit” and “stay” and try again. He is still learning this one, so be patient!
