Virtual Geographies began as a conceptual exploration of physical and virtual space. VG presents a framework of four different spaces: cyberspace, conceptual space, experiential space, and physical geography. Through the use of choreography and digital infrastructure, these spaces are presented as zones of communication and interaction for a live audience.

We first premiered this work in a split live performance between Berlin and London in Dec. 2019 at the @altesfinanzamt in Berlin at @thefactorydalston in London via YouTube. This was pre-COVID, pre-virtual everything, and in hindsight set the stage for what performances were to become in 2020.

In our current, ‘virtual’ #covid19 era, we have deepened this investigation to ask how our work is relevant to the time and conversations we are having. What does ‘geography’ do when we collaborate over distance using videoconferencing tools? How can we think more deeply about racialised geography? How does our idea of performance space change when it is exclusively a virtual, online space?
