"Ich bin ich selbst!", ruft die Nase aus, als sie gefragt wird, wohin sie gehört.

Major Kov, der selbsternannte Besitzer der Nase (ursprünglich von Gogol im Jahr 1836 erschaffen), wacht eines schicksalhaften Morgens auf und stellt fest, dass das zentrale Merkmal seines Gesichts fehlt. Der narzisstische Mann rennt verzweifelt durch die Stadt und mobilisiert alle Ressourcen, um sie zu finden. Währenddessen zieht THE NOSE ungezwungen durch das Chaos von Johannesburg. Die exzentrische südafrikanische Choreografin und Tänzerin Jessica Nupen inszeniert diese absurde Geschichte fast 190 Jahre später neu, mit verschiedenen und verschmolzenen Tanzstilen, die von Oper und Rap gerahmt werden.

Von der Bühne auf die Leinwand transformiert, ist The Nose eine hybride Filminstallation, die von Live-Musik begleitet wird. Auf der Grundlage der Originalpartitur und dem Rap-Libretto des kanadischen Musikers und Rappers Josh "Socalled" Dolgin, und arrangiert vom südafrikanischen Musiker Gareth Lubbe, verarbeitet das Stück Themen wie Gier, Hierarchie und Emanzipation vor einem implodierenden Hintergrund wachsender sozialer Spannungen, politischer Katastrophen und Fake News. Das spektakuläre Bühnenbild führt zusammen mit einem transnationalen Ensemble aus bewegten Sänger*innen und singenden Tänzer*innen zu einer Expedition in eine absurde, von Aberglauben und Offenbarung getriebene Realität.

“I am myself!” exclaims The Nose when interrogated about where she belongs.

Major Kov, the self-claimed owner of The Nose (originally created by Gogol in 1836) wakes up one fateful morning and discovers that the central feature of his face has disappeared. The narcissistic and self-important man frantically runs around the town marshalling all the resources he has to find it. Meanwhile The Nose is seen parading through the chaos of Johannesburg with effortless authority.

Fast forward to the 21st Century, we find a wildly-reimagined interpretation of this absurd story explored through electrifying physical expression and fused dance styles framed by opera and rap, all conceptualized by the eccentric Hamburg-based South African choreographer and dancer Jessica Nupen.

Transformed from stage onto screen, The Nose is a full-scale hybrid film installation accompanied by live music. An original score and rap libretto by Canadian musician and rapper Josh “Socalled” Dolgin, directed and composed by South African musician Gareth Lubbe, The Nose responds to themes of greed, hierarchy and emancipation against an imploding backdrop of growing social tensions, political cataclysms and fake news. A spectacular set design together with an international ensemble of dancing singers and singing dancers leads an expedition into an absurd reality driven by superstition and revelation
