Possibly a forgotten oldie for some, but not for others. One of the more moving love ballads of the early 1960s, this one hit the charts in the fall of 1963. If Timi Yuro had a male counterpart it had to be Lenny Welch. The longing and despair in this vocal is endless and of unfathomable depth. "Love Hurts" states another more famous ballad by Roy Orbison and later Nazareth. Here, in "Since I Fell For You," one can feel the pain. The kind with no remedy. Ever.
The history of the song is rather brief on Wikipedia: "Since I Fell for You" is a jazz and pop standard. The blues ballad was composed by Buddy Johnson in 1945 and was first popularized by his sister, Ella Johnson, with Buddy Johnson and His Orchestra. The biggest hit version was recorded by Lenny Welch in 1963, reaching number four on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart on December 28, 1963."
It reaches #4 on Cash Box the same day, and remained in that position for two weeks.
Other hits by Lenny Welch include "Ebb Tide" (1964), "You Don't Know Me" (1960), which would later go to #1 in 1981 when it was covered by Mickey Gilley, and the first version of "A Taste of Honey" in 1962. "Since I Fell for You" was his biggest hit, debuting on Cash Box on October 26, 1963. Sadly, its climb up the charts to #4 was eclipsed by a nation in mourning over the sudden death of its slain president.
