The theme for The Flintstones was a favorite of its composer, Hoyt Curtin. About a dozen years after his death in 2000, however, it emerged that he had been partial to it longer than most have assumed. When the papers of Pearl Schlag Hupel, formerly of the music department at USC, and whose course in counterpoint Curtin took while earning his master's there, became publicly available—they had been sealed for sixty years following her passing in 1953—musicologist Edwin Alfaro found a number of student exercises in her files. Among them was this three-part fugue by the young composer, its title a punning reference to the text of the well-known Easter chorale that had been assigned earlier in the year.
The now-familiar subject, which has nothing to do with the chorale itself, is graphically highlighted throughout the animation, as is the material that comes from it most directly.
