I was asked a question this week, “Why are some kids good and others bad? Why do some kids just seem to be rotten?” I sort of chuckled and said, “the problem started in the garden of Eden. I went on to say, that the moment Eve was seduced by the serpent and Adam willfully sinned against God, sin entered the world. Since that time, everyone has been born in sin.” It is the task of the parent to attempt redirect the thinking and actions of the children God blessed them with. This is called discipline. We were all born in sin and iniquity. It is in our nature to be sinful. This famous line of Benjamin Harris’ 1690 New England Primer sums it up well, “In Adam’s Fall, We Sinned All.” We were born in sin and iniquity, and it is the parent’s righteous responsibility to help a child recognize this and guide the child to Christ who provides redemption – the forgiveness of sin.
Let’s not lump all children into this category, some are born with birth issues that cause a different set of problems.
Parenting is one of the most difficult of roles in our world. We all want our children to do well – we feel it is a reflection on us. It is to some extent, but not entirely. Because we can raise our children well, and they still end up doing their own thing and going their own way.
I recall a conversation I had with a young correctional officer. We were talking about his son and his view of parenting. In the course of the conversation, I asked him how he was helping his son grow and mature. He said, “I let him grow on his own and become the person he wants to be.” I asked why he did that? He said, “I really don’t know what he should do with his life.” I told this young man that he has the chief responsibility to help his son, because, they teach him at school, he learns from TV and the music he listens to and he learns from his friends. I asked, “don’t you think you should tell him what he should do? Because all these other sources are telling him – and you are the most important man in his life.”
