'Going in blind', especially for a music concert, is both exhilarating & nightmarish for any live TV director. No rehearsal (save a short sound-check) is almost always a guarantee. You just rig, point, shoot and hope to not miss a beat. And one rule overrides all -- there will be no retakes.
One then relies on intuition, luck and trust in a supremely-talented team of camera ops, lighting & visual experience designers, all rallying together, listening to your dizzying commands and serving the moment.

In my 3 years of directing the multi-camera coverage for the Mahindra Blues Festival, one began to savour this process of 'going in blind' & serving the moment. The filming experience came to be led, not by shot breakdowns, but by the way the performance evolved and how the crowd responded to it. Being a musician and understanding music structure & progression also helped.

This one set by the legendary Beth Hart stands out because everything came together so magically, with her rendition of 'My California' guiding us. If you were in the audience that February evening of 2019, you'd know exactly what I mean :) And there could be no better magical moment that what happens at the end of this performance.

Filmed on a Sony HDC - 1700 multi-format rig and edited live, this remains my favourite MBF performance.
