About 70 years ago, a psychologist named Karl Dunker did an experiment to see how people solve problems. And he gave Group 1 a box of thumbtacks, matches, and a candle. And he told them to light the candle and put it on the wall in such a way that the wax didn't drip on the floor.
Now Group 1 didn't do too well. It took them about 15 minutes to figure it out.
So with Group 2, he took the thumbtacks out of the box and gave them the same instructions. And they did much better. They were thinking "outside the box."
Now if you have a tune that you're having trouble with, think outside the box. My normal go-to is to just rewrite the arrangement, and they go back later and learn the original.
