Good Evening Melrose. This is Mayor Paul Brodeur

After five days of decline in the number of new cases statewide, the Massachusetts Department of Public Health reports 1,745 news cases today. This is an increase of 189 from yesterday’s 1,556 new cases. Melrose has had a total of 126 confirmed cases since the beginning of the pandemic according to today’s DPH weekly report of city-specific data.

The City of Melrose’s Public Works Department has started the third phase of its sanitary sewer investigation program. The purpose of the project is to identify problem areas of the sewer system that are in need of rehabilitation and/or repair in an effort to prevent infiltration from entering into the pipes.

Beginning tonight, Wednesday, April 22, 2020, crews from Inland Waters, Inc. of Johnston RI, will be present in certain neighborhoods of the city between the hours of 11:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m. A representative from Weston & Sampson Engineers, Inc., our wastewater consultant, and/or a representative from the City will also be present during the work. Please check out the city website for more information including a list of streets where this work will take place during the spring.

In Earth Day news, I want to thank Keep Melrose Beautiful and its many volunteers who picked up trash throughout the city today. We are looking forward to organizing bigger events as circumstances allow, but we always encourage everyone to keep Melrose clean. Be sure to follow Keep Melrose Beautiful on Facebook to learn what’s coming up.

Also beginning today in the news section of the website, we are posting a series of articles about steps Melrose has taken to become greener and save money. I am proud of our community’s commitment to reducing our carbon footprint and preserving our environment, and the 50th anniversary of Earth Day is great time remind ourselves about the importance of our efforts.

Finally, tomorrow is National Picnic Day, and we are celebrating in Melrose by supporting our local businesses and restaurants. The forecast says it is going to 55 and mostly sunny, so you might just be able to eat outside. But inside or out, it is always a great day for picnic, so join in the fun if you have a chance. There is a list of participating businesses at melrosetogether.com

In closing, please continue staying home whenever possible, practicing social distancing, wearing face coverings, washing hands, and cleaning and disinfecting surfaces regularly. Together, we will get through this.

Thank you and good night.
