The Rhythms Club

The Rhythms Club is primarily a space for the over 60’s but any age is welcome to join us. It first came about in June 2018 as part of “Rhythm Village” , a community festival of movement practice and creative celebration. A dancingTao CIC and All in Movement Erasmus funded project on social inclusion. In this festival we explored how dancing and embodied movement can bring us together to create more inclusive and vibrant community.

The over 60’s dance proved to be a success with many of the participants expressing interest in there being a regular class they could attend. We set up a weekly class at St Peters Church, Vauxhall - and later moved to Mursell Community hall in Stockwell

In March 2020 when we were struck by the covid-19 pandemic and all was in lockdown we started to dream up how we could take the classes on line - after piloting and many dances with the technicals we eventually got online. And we are dancing every week - now The Rhythms Club is not bound by geographical location or physical limitation that would prevent some dancers attending a class in the room - we are alone but connected, isolated but together, locked down but still moving! When we can we intend to return to dancing in rooms as well as keeping the online classes going.

In this short film, made by Music & Video producer Alex Forster - alexforster.net - we show what happens in a class like this, and although this explains and shows a class ‘in a room’ the maps of movement can easily be transferred to “dancing at home”
