A major figure in the lettrist movement, Maurice Lemaître revolutionized cinema in 1951 with “Le Film est déjà commencé ?” (Has the Feature Started Yet?) and invented a new form of performance:
“Syncinema.” His many cinematic works, made between the 1960s and the present day, confirm his position as one of the most important avant-garde filmmakers of his generation.

Lemaître invented interactive cinema, then pushed it to its limits by distributing instruction manuals as the audience entered the theater, inviting them to take anactive part in the screening; and projecting the film directly onto their bodies. The whole operation became a veritable installation, with multiple screens, projections, and performances; Lemaître used his own body and voice, as well as those of his collaborators, as part of the experience. Between 1974 and 1985, he created a series of Films Imaginaires (Imaginary Films), which consisted of printed cards inviting spectators to create their own film by following the minimal instructions typed onto the cards; the resulting film(s) would become an homage to the written word which, transformed by projection, would take on a whole “other dimension.”

Films Imaginaires (Imaginary Films) consists of texts from a range of works that had already been published here and there, and that were includedin the revised edition of my collected Cinematic Works. I fi lmed these texts and converted them into intertitles for projection. The conversion of these texts to frames of film, and their subsequent projection, transforms these “films” into an even more progressive type of cinematic creation.

Ses nombreuses réalisations filmiques, des années 60 à nos jours, le placent parmi les cinéastes d’avant-garde les plus importants de sa génération.

Lemaître invente le cinéma interactif, le prolongeant à l’extrême en distribuant aux spectateurs des manuels avant d’entrer en salle, leur proposant de participer activement à la séance, projetant directement le film sur leurs corps. Le tout devient une véritable instal- lation, avec démultiplication des écrans, projections multiples, et performance, Lemaître se servant de son corps, de sa voix, et de ceux des autres. Ainsi, entre 1974 et 1985, il conçut une série de Films imaginaires, constitués de cartons proposant aux spectateurs de créer leur propre film à partir de ces quelques lignes, mais faisant du film un hommage à l’écrit, transformé par la projection, prenant une « autre dimension ».

Les Films Imaginaires sont constitués des seuls textes, filmés en cartons pour l’écran, de diverses œuvres déjà montrées au public à leur date, et qui ont été imprimées ici ou là, puis réunis dans l’édition augmentée de mes Œuvres de Cinéma. Le simple passage en photogrammes, puis en projection de ceux-ci, sonorisés, transforme ces « films » en une autre sorte de création filmique, plus avancée encore.
