The story draws from original material created by children from Choppington Primary School during their visit to Woodhorn Museum in March 2020.

During their visit, the children explored the museum and imagined the stories of different characters connected to the history of Woodhorn’s colliery site. These characters included a blacksmith, a young miner, a geologist and the pigeons and ponies depicted in paintings by Ashington’s famous ‘Pitmen Painters’.

Writer and actor Danielle Burn drew from these imagined stories to create ‘Dolly’. We hope you enjoy watching Danielle read this special story. The story is shared in three parts that are each around 10 minutes long. Each part includes an invitation for you to contribute your own ideas and drawings to the project.

‘Dolly’ is written and performed by Danielle Burn and features illustrations by Katie Chappell and film production by Jason Thompson. Special thanks go to Project Manager Claire Venus and to Jenny and Carole from the Woodhorn Museum Learning Team.

‘Dolly’ was created as part of our ‘START: Explore Arts with Woodhorn’ project. This project aims to connect children and young people with art and cultural opportunities. Museums Northumberland is working in partnership with five schools in Northumberland to support children to enjoy exploring art, heritage and creativity.

The ‘START: Explore Arts with Woodhorn’ project is supported with funding from Arts Council England through Culture Bridge North East.
