Josephine Massarella was an independent filmmaker and teacher based in Hamilton, Ontario, who worked primarily with 16mm film. She employed lyrical filmmaking strategies to create beautiful, enigmatic works, stripped of the clichés of dramatic action, haunted by a sense of loss. Her films have screened internationally at venues such as the New York International Film Festival and the Montreal International Women's Film Festival. Her last piece, 165708, received the award for Best Experimental Film at the 2018 Ann Arbor Film Festival. Josephine was very active in her last five years of life, and finished her last three films as a member of LIFT: Liason of Independent Filmmakers Toronto. With the support of Josephine's family, LIFT now provides the Josephine Massarella Artist Award to female-identifying artists over 50 who wish to return to filmmaking after a long absence. This is just another way in which, along with the rich body of work Josephine has left behind, we're reminded that in matters of life and art there is often no end. WUFF is honoured to close our seventh show with a screening of 6 films by Josephine Massarella.
