The Instrument Builders Project Kyoto: Circulating Echo

Throughout history humans have invented and made instruments and sounds in order to make easier the tasks of everyday life. In Indonesia, Dangngong is one an example of this. Dangngong's are used to give messages to fishermen about weather conditions at sea, and as pest repellents in the rice fields. These instruments are also used for kite games. Dangngong are tied to the back of the kite structure as it flies through the air, and when the wind blows, the snare/strings vibrate, producing the sound ...anggg…. ngoongg…, which is where the name 'Dangngong' comes from.
I have spent more than a decade doing research on small islands in the Indonesian archipelago about the cultural traditions and uses of the Dangngong. In this project I designed Dangngong which can be enjoyed by everyone easily. Play the instrument by moving it through the air, as if you are making an eight in the sky. This movement represents the life of the farmers and fishermen.
