WOMEN’S EMPOWERMENT INTERACTIVE EXPERIENCE
Featured below is a two page storyboard exploring my interactive experience that I have developed over the course of the semester, utilising the International Women’s Day March Poster (1980) designed by Toni Robertson, sourced from the Di Holdway Poster Archive
Collection of the MAAS Museum digital archive. My interactive experience idea was
catalysed by an immediete interest in the badge that the women in the poster wears on her overalls, alongside the desire to effectively communicate the role these marches played in the women’s liberation movement of the 80’s. My interactive experience intends to transport audiences through the utilisation of both a physical badge and Augemented
Reality (AR), by immersing viewers into the lives of those women fighting for freedom in 1980, and how it would feel to be standing alongside them.
The interactive experience begins by taking a badge from the box beneath the poster, and scanning it using a hand held device camera. Once AR is activated, a historic photograph will apear from the time, alongside the woman from the poster appearing to guide viewers as to what the image is and how they can engage with it. The photographs from the 80’s marches, triggered as a response to the AR, provide an opportunity for audiences to
immerse themselves in the historic context in which the poster was created, and the event type in which it is promoting. Whilst exploring the image by moving the device around, pop up’s will appear that provide more extensive information around the context for those interested. Once the first AR experience is completed, viewers can interact with those around them and other members of the audience, by scanning their badge and experiencing new content catalysed by AR. Once the utilisation of the AR technology is completed, viewers are able to take the tangible item of the badge home with them, sparking
opportunity for future reflection of what they learnt and discovered.
Targeted primarily to women who were not present at the time of the 80’s liberation
movement and those interested in the history of wome’s rights in Australia, this
interactive experience is engaging and immersive through the integration of both graphic elements, tangible objects and augemented reality technology. This interactive experience
intends to educate audiences, and provide them with an opportunity to connect with and
imagine themselves in a historic context.
