“Tomorrow, We Carry On” highlights Dulce Garcia, the Dreamer who risked the life she leads in America to sue the President for rescinding the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. For Dulce and the San Diego Border Dreamers organization she leads, the stakes are even higher than the fate of 800,000 DACA recipients. Dulce has experienced deep poverty and homelessness, worked three jobs to pay for college, and is constantly worried about her family being deported. Yet, from a young age, she was determined to become an attorney to fight for justice and maintains hope because she fiercely believes in the American legal system. She and the Border Dreamer activists work tirelessly to raise awareness and funds for immigrant justice on both sides of the border, including aid for the 5,000 Central American migrants waiting in Tijuana to request asylum in the United States. Restrictive policy and anti-immigrant vitriol affect all who live in the border region. “Tomorrow, We Carry On” takes us from Barrio Logan in San Diego to Casa del Migrante, a migrant shelter in Tijuana for Central American migrants and deportees from the US. Already stretched thin, shelter coordinator Valeria Ruiz Griego must respond to ever-changing US policies. One day, there is an overflow of deportees. The next, thousands of Central Americans are needing shelter having been denied their legal right to request U.S. asylum. Taking place at Christmas time, our story is framed around two posada celebrations: one in Tijuana and the other in Barrio Logan. The posada is the story of Mary and Joseph seeking refuge – some might say asylum. The tradition stands as a symbol for seeking home in a hostile land. As recent arrivals south of the border take respite in a familiar tradition, a young group of Dreamers takes pride in their heritage and standing for what they believe in at a fundraiser that celebrates their resilience. When the Blue Wave flips the US House of Representatives, Dulce celebrates, but she knows their work is far from over. The year 2018 has been detrimental for immigrant rights, but on both sides of the border people continue to fight for their communities.
