This solo was created using two pieces of music from The Handmaid’s Tale, “The Smell of Caves” by Adam Taylor and Elisabeth Moss, and “Mom’s Got Work,” by Adam Taylor. The original phrase was first set on my advanced contemporary dancers from Main St 56 Dance Company in the Fall of 2020. It is drawn from the emotions my dancers and I were experiencing on the day of the Amy Coney Barrett confirmation to the Supreme Court. Being a small class of 4 dancers, we were able to briefly discuss how we were feeling after hearing of the confirmation and our concerns about the potential ramifications of this decision. It draws inspiration from the heaviness, the sadness, and the fear we were all feeling at the time. The rest of the solo was recently created and draws inspiration from my experiences in the past few months, including President Biden’s election to the present day. It moves from the despair over the confirmation, to the cautious hope of the election, to today’s determination to continue taking positive action for the growth of our community and country as a whole.
