As part of the Green New Deal Superstudio, we designed a “device” that could be deployed throughout the city. My team designed a tool that could potentially remediate contaminated industrial sites. The project maintained an air of “pragmatic fantasy,” as ambitious as the Green New Deal, but grounded in validity of process. We identified lead as a prominent urban contaminant and focused on industrial areas. Research into the process of remediation of lead drove the design of our device.
The device was to be a vessel driven by wind that would track the remediation. Through an application of water, phosphate, lime, and a subsequent seeding scheme to identify “success”, we came up with a device that could do it all, and put on a performance whilst remediating.
The device would be deployed in areas where there is a high likelihood of lead contamination. Namely, high concentrations of “peaker” power plants, bare soils, and open plots throughout the city, where the device could perform alongside wind patterns. In addition, focus would be along coastal areas where inundation due to sea level rise could cause the contaminants to become unearthed.
