This video was made possible by 27 dancers in 4 different countries during the 2020 pandemic. Like so many others, I was furloughed from my job in March and decided to embark on a creative project. I started to see a few of my dancer friends posting videos of themselves dancing in their homes alone. This gave me the idea to produce a collaborative dance video highlighting different dancers and the different spaces/realities they were living in. I contacted every dancer I knew and even asked some friends to invite other dancers to the project. I created a group chat of these participants and that’s when the endeavor took off! My creative directors and I came up with prompts and motivators to help guide the dancers’ improv. We asked them to use their specific space as a catalyst for their movement. “Is your quarantine space expansive or constricting? Does your space make you want to dance small or big?” We asked them to think about the ideas of restlessness, connection, isolation, monotony, freedom, laziness and empathy. The dancers sent me back footage of themselves improvising with these themes in mind, all shot on their personal iPhones. After that, Caileigh and Patrick (creative directors) each created a choreographic phrase that they filmed and sent out to our dance group. About half the group learned these phrases on their own and then sent me back the footage they filmed. This part was integral for my vision: I wanted to highlight the isolation this pandemic has induced but also wanted to emphasize that the creation of connection was possible. After I received all the footage, I started editing. Because there was no script, no shot list, no treatment, I took my time with this process. I let the footage direct me as an editor/producer and I have to say I’m so thrilled with how the end result turned out. If you feel isolated during this time, I hope this video brings you feelings of connectivity. I am so incredibly thankful for the creative directors and dancers who made this possible. Without them, this project would not have been made.
