Manuel’s Pen is an audiovisual installation composed of three video-art pieces. Each one represents an act of observational drawing, in different places.
In 2007, Manuel San-Payo, a Portuguese artist, gave me a pen that has a camera built-in. That time I didn’t know exactly what to do with a pen that has a camera on it. One day I did a drawing with it wondering about the movement of the pen. Can it be a drawing in itself? Does it represent the action and/or substitutes the marks on the paper?
This triggered a process of thinking about the drawing as a process and/or as a result. It is old question. But I was interested in the video —the pen’s movement— as part of this drawing process and result.
The installation shows three different environments. An empty sky (Manuel’s Pen #1), trees (Manuel’s Pen #2) and buildings (Manuel’s Pen #3). The narrative presented by this sequence suggests a movement that goes from the emptiness to the fullest. From the top to the bottom. Air to surface.
