Katharina Keller, HYDRODAMALIS GIGAS, HD-Video, 17min, 2020

By April 2018, a hundred and one previously unknown minerals had been identified on the Tolbachik. The Tolbachik is one of thirty active volcanoes on the Russian Kamchatka Peninsula. A place where researchers from all over the globe are working side by side, to explore the geological potential of our planet in the ever-changing relief of the volcanic landscapes. In Soviet times, this area served as a testing ground for lunar vehicles before sending them into space.

HYDRODAMALIS GIGAS is dedicated to the German natural scientist and doctor Georg Wilhelm Steller, who discovered Alaska in the 18th century together with naval officer Vitus Bering, Steller made the first records of the then unknown country. Driven to record everything he encounters according to his possibilities, Steller created entire encyclopaedias during his expeditions. His diverse notes on Kamchatka prove to be particularly detailed. Especially from today's perspective, the description of Steller's sea cow is an important part of his notes. Steller discovered the sea cow on the second Kamchatka expedition, after which it got extinct within about 27 years.

In 1977 an artist living on the Commander Islands, Sergei Pasenyuk, started collecting washed-up animal bones; his son Dmitry was involved in this project. By 2014 they collected enough fragments to be able to assemble a Steller's sea cow skeleton. The Pasenyuks donated the exhibit to Vityaz Aero Airport, which was recently opened on the periphery of Jelisevo, where the exhibit is now located at the second gate.

Research can transform chances into necessities. What the researcher encounters can turn chance into necessity or vice versa. The moment of chance creates necessary patterns in the world, releases unpredictable potentials, makes them visible and can thus become the starting point for a direction of movement and thought of the living subject. Every action creates its own equivalent reality. The structures generated in this way absorb all these actions, movements and resulting developments that change the place. They leave their traces, imprint themselves in the material to offer themselves to future generations like a script for deciphering.
