For the writer and art critic Michel Ragon, you cannot talk about Karel Appel without evoking CoBrA, an experimental painting movement born in post-war northern Europe. Karel Appel – who moved to Paris at the beginning of the 50s - “paints the savagery of his era”, using spontaneous gestures, jarring colours and unstable forms.

Bird Over the Black Sea is a dizzying work. Five colours: white, black, red, yellow and blue, laid down forcefully on the canvas in dense impasto, is enough to suggest a frenzied sea and a seagull overhead, with huge wings tossed by the wind. The thick paint material, tumultuous and vibrant, covers every last inch of the canvas, seemingly able to re-form ad infinitum to generate new images.
