John Hornbuckle from Deakin University talks about the Smarter Irrigation for Profit 2 Smart Sensing and Automation project work being done at Keytah Moree. The field is a large bankless channel block where irrigation gates have been fitted with Padman stops auto-winches, there are environode and water mark soil moisture probes, and a weather station.
The project is using forecasts, on ground sensors, satellites and linkages to automated infrastructure to start and stop irrigations more precisely. The sensors measure and monitor water movement on farm, this information is then used to inform irrigation decisions. Automation enables more efficient use of limited labour resources and improves the irrigation water use efficiency on farm.
This project is supported by Deakin University and the CRDC, through funding from the Australian Government Department of Agriculture and Water Resources as part of its Rural R&D for Profit program and project partners include Padman Stops, GoannaAg, Sundown Pastoral Company and the GVIA.
