Home with the Nine Little Bears was our ‘Pandemic Project’. My sister, Lynn Pickering wrote the script after a bedtime story that she has told several generations of kids and I designed, directed and animated the film over this past year. Our dear friend Klaus Ebert narrated, composed and performed all the music and sound. The purpose of a good bedtime story is to help children make peace with whatever day they have had and to feel the world is a good and safe place, before they drift into a needed sleep. This was our goal, to make our story a comforting place full of stability and innocent joy that children can inhabit for a while and return to with anticipation.
I designed, directed and animated this film with some excellent additional modelling from JB Garraza for the original version of the 'Little Bears'. The 3D animation for this film was animated entirely in the Unity game engine using Soxware Interactive's 'Umotion Pro' as my character animation tool and everything was rendered from Unity using Oliver Pavicevic's 'Deckard Render' renderer. Both of these tools were absolutely essential to my work flow and both performed exceptionally well, the software authors were both extremely helpful and generous with their time. The remaining animation was done in After Effects with paint effects added in 'Studio Artist'.
Our plans for this film are as part of an anthology now in development along with a ‘Read Along’ book and an AR game.
