ARE YOU STILL BROKEN or LA DANAIDE LOVES #METOO is the sculpture of a kneeling woman carved by hand out of Carrara marble mixed with a big mirror glas shard on top of a glass mirror surface. The work refers to, or is actually a next level version, of the original sculpture La Danaide by Rodin but with a contemporary social significance and message.

This modern woman seems mentally broken. Her face is not visible. It lies behind a large piece of broken mirror. If one looks into the shard, one will see one’s own face where the woman's face would be. Even when looking behind the whimsical shard, her face is not visible. It remains hidden behind the sculpted hair and fingers, which ensures the woman’s anonymity and makes it possible for the viewer to think oneself as the one lying there broken.

A significant detail forms the string sculpted from the marble. By which the La Danaide sculpture is now catapulted to the present time. But which even more important, creates a conflict in possible feelings felt by the spectator. Two different forces are now giving conflicting signals to the viewer. On the one hand, one can see a vulnerable broken woman with mental pain for whom one can feel compassion and recognise oneself in. The shard even more symbolises this sharp hurt.

But at the same time the tiny string emphasizes the buttocks, the sensuality in the posture and adds a sexual dimension to the sculpture. Now the woman becomes vulnerable and seductive desirable at the same time. What will be the dominant feeling or value judgment of the spectator?

The conflict in evoking emotions and associations is also pursued through even more forces in the object. The sculpture with the fine lines of the pose, the highly polished back, the smooth shoulder blades and the wavy hair, exudes a soft streamlined energy that has been made possible with the greatest attention and effort. But suddenly there is the whimsical illogical sharp imperfect shard. Stuck into the polished image like a knife. A huge jammer in this balanced orchestra. A counter-movement in the artwork itself to create a more interesting movement of energy.

Besides illustrating this conflict and creating an aesthetic image, the work also has a social message. It wants to express the complex role and dual feeling of a woman to be seen as an object of seduction and desire. In addition to the temptation, there must be respect.

The mythological story Rodin's La Danaide refers to, is the story of an ancient Greek king Danaide who arranged his 50 daughters to marry and secretly ordered them all to kill their new husbands during their wedding night. Only one daughter Hypermnestra, one of the Danaides, did not obey her father because her husband respected her wish not to have sexual intercourse during the wedding night. The fact that this man respected the personal values and wishes of the woman, saved his life. It is this message and of illustrating woman’s surviving power that the work wants to send out. Hence the title of this work LA DAINDE LOVES #METOO. The work forms an additional witness statement and importance of the #metoo movement. The need not to disrespect the personal values and boundaries of women. With the warning to the men that it can be a dangerous thing. And a call for women to see her own strength.
