Footage filmed on 10th Sept 2021 of the wreck of the SS Commodore while snorkelling at Sheringham, Norfolk UK.
I stumbled across the shipwreck as I was returning to shore after a couple of hours snorkelling on the North Norfolk chalk reef.
In this video I have recorded an accompanying voiceover to tell some of the history of the Commodore and the night she ran ashore in 1896.
As a gale blew up from the North East the Sheringham Lifeboat - Henry Ramey Upcher launched and saved all 14 of the crew on board in awful conditions.
Six years later the wreck was still presenting a hazard to local fishing boats so officials from Trinity House came out and, using explosive charges, blew the ship into smaller pieces. Her wreckage has laid just under the surface here ever since.
Usually the wreck is mostly covered by sand with a few pieces poking through the sand at extreme low tides. Due to the recent scouring action of the sea a much larger amount of the wreck can be seen just below the surface on the rare days that very calm seas allow the sediment to drop out of the water.
