The work is 21 single-channel videos to be displayed in a huge black room. Each wall is made for
video could be projected on them disorderly. The room is coloured with dark black and the number of
exhibition artworks could be adjusted by the size of showroom.
This is created when I was in Location One International Artist Residency in New York in 2008. I visualised what’s in my mind, and my own confusion and shook about how to work in such a
metropolis. It’s a physical practice to see how the city inspired me, and I also see a few Formosan art workers they try hard to be seen or even just subsist in there. It’s interesting enough to see the
discrimination and prejudices still existed in such a melting pot. Once I had been told by a few people:
“You fascinated with New York, but it won’t answer you back.” I assumed that’s because capitalism exercises massively in there. You could see there’s tons of chance out there yet it’s divided by different social level. Chances are everywhere, but it could be different by where you came from and who you are.
It makes me confused how can we trade this kind of living styles with leaving our own country in order to knock the door for accessing the international art system? What’s the meaning for us to trading our life with this giant machine?
I feel the dynamic movement in the Big Apple, and see the insignificant from the people when I was in the artist residency camp. We are barely to be seen and coated with city concrete. It makes me fear and hesitate about where I settled in a paltry space in such a massive city. Do I really sure where I came from?
Kids are the inconsiderable character here. They shrunk themselves in a certain place in the room they used to know, all they could do is finding their own existence by being with themselves. However, they still have no idea how to settle down their heart in a big city with their petty existence and
shocked about everything in the jungle. They turn out to be losing their own true colour by adjusting themselves to fit in how urban life works although they still try hard to find back their own self-conscious.I set to tell the story across race, and economic background from every neighbourhood in Manhattan,Queens, Brooklyn, Bronx, Flushing, and many other places in New York. I meant to conduct the story
from different perspectives, and the crucial thing is I reveal what inspired me, how I interactive with New York from walking inside several buildings in there, and chat with people and family who havedifferent roots. I don’t just do sightseeing and being a tourist in there without my own thought. It’s a deeply get involved or has profoundly conversation with natives. Its sort of makes me feel more
what’s a New Yorker should be like, what’s the real-life to live in there, and what kind of life we lived as an ordinary person all at a glance. It’s the key to make the recreation process disclosed, and it’s important to tell the situation I’d like to share with at the same time.
