This experiment is part of a series titled Cinematic Experiments, created by Margie Medlin with, dance makers Vicki Van Hout, and Patrick Lucky Lartey, cinematographer Martin Fox. The research took place as part of short residencies at Critical Path in Sydney, Australia, in January 2017. Funded by the Emerging and Experimental fund of the Australia Council for the Arts.

In five repetitions of an arm phrase a postproduction camera floats and zooms creating different renditions. I explore the notion that the way that the body’s movement that fills and frees the camera frame affects the space within the frame. I am studying how the camera ‘can multiply objects, … it can divide objects and give significance and unity to a small, chosen section of reality’ (Stephenson, Debrix 1965: 89). In these experiments, I am interested in how the camera movement in tandem with the dancer’s movement can analyse space by fragmenting it, then re-forming it into a new whole.
