Cutting to the Cancerous Heart!

“Knowing that you are completely forgiven destroys the power of sin in your life.” - Joseph Prince

And behold, some of the scribes said to themselves, “This man is blaspheming.” But Jesus, knowing their thoughts, said, “Why do you think evil in your hearts? For which is easier, to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Rise and walk’? But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins”—He then said to the paralytic—“Rise, pick up your bed and go home.”
(Matthew 9:1-8)

Yesterday, I challenged you to put your faith into action. Today, let’s focus on Jesus’ action or lack thereof. He did the opposite of what the carnal men thought Jesus should do. Rather than telling the paralyzed man to get up, pick up his mat, and walk, which would have been easier in man’s eyes and far more braggadocios, the Serving King presses into the deeper issues of life.

Stop right there; hit the pause button, or as my grandmother would have said, “Hold your horses!” He said what? Imagine yourself in this scene. You see a paralyzed man being carried. You probably have witnessed Jesus healing others of leprosy, blindness, and lameness. You don’t know Jesus eventually tells the man to stand and walk. All you hear Him say is the man’s sins are forgiven. How could He say this and seemingly do nothing? While the scribes, and I dare say many other bystanders, were looking at the outward appearance of the paralyzed man, Jesus knew in His heart the man was a sinner in need of something far greater than a physical healing. He also knew what the scribes were thinking!

As a chaplain at a cancer hospital, I have a philosophy of care—If we heal every patient every time through modern medicine, but do nothing to treat the heart, we have failed the patient and committed what I call, “medical or spiritual malpractice.” A broken heart is harder to diagnose as needing medical or spiritual care, but it, nonetheless, needs attention. Jesus saw through the obvious physical paralysis and cut right to the cancerous hearts of both the paralyzed man and, I hope, the scribes. His words penetrated to the marrow of their hearts and truly healed him, setting him free, and, hopefully, setting the scribes free as well. I challenge you to look into a man’s heart, offer forgiveness, and set that man free! Let everyone experience the love of the Serving King…
