This film clip is essentially an abstract, chaotic rumination on the inner dialogue of the mind and exterior landscapes of the body. I was interested in creating distorted angles and images in the form of self-portraiture and drawn to the idea of using my body to create shadows and shapes that evoke spaces and terrain, like landscapes. I also wanted to push myself technically and creatively and hand-drawn animation, which is new to me, seemed like the perfect medium to balance out the stark photographic imagery with something more organic and tangible. The process taught me a lot about patience and the end result is something I’m incredibly proud of.

About The Song:
Thomas Calder, AKA Daggy Man, has released new single A Reliable Figure; the latest
chapter in his story chronicling the dramatic highs, following a decade of success between
his solo project, Daggy Man, and band Trouble with Templeton which saw him tour the
US, UK and stack up millions of streams, and incredible lows struggling through a
debilitating battle with mental illness which has seen him at times close himself away,
unable to face the world.
A Reliable Figure explores Thomas’ sense of self and deconstructs the idea of how words
can be used to define us.

“The song explores how language can be used to define our sense of self. The idea came to
fruition when I was reflecting on the words that people choose to remember others by
after their gone, and I asked myself what words might I want to be used to distil who I am,
or who I want to be, and finally came to ‘a reliable figure, or someone that’ll be there for
you,” said Thomas. “In some ways, those are the words I feel I want to embody but don’t
quite live up to, or want to work towards being.
The track also served as a moment of experimentation for Thomas.
“I wanted to explore form and structure, challenging myself to interrupt the impulse to lean
on traditional song structures and instead, bring together distinctly different parts to work
together somewhat like a medley; stopping and starting, jumping from one thought to
another narratively and mixing heavy and abrupt sounds with delicate moments.
A Reliable Figure will be the third taste from Daggy Man’s upcoming third album, ‘Yawn’,
set for release in early 2020. The album will be a window into Thomas' anxious mind on a
healing journey.
