Synopsis

Recently, excessive use of force by law enforcement has re-emerged as one of the defining civil
rights issues in America. Since the high-profile police killing of Michael Brown in Ferguson,
Missouri, followed by the police involved fatalities of Eric Garner, Laquan McDonald, Tamir
Rice, Philando Castile and most recently Stephon Clark in Sacramento, California, the nation has
turned its attention to these issues. In light of these events, this documentary film examines the
impact of police-involved incidents in Sacramento, which has experienced several high-profile
police involved shootings and a significant spike in gun-violence related homicides.

Our work-in-progress captures the feelings and sentiments of residents following police
misconduct, including the recent police-involved shooting of Stephon Clark which has received
national attention. Our work shows the broader impact of police use of force and its intersection
with gun-violence by illustrating how it affects community perceptions of trust towards law
enforcement, the responses of local activists demanding police accountability and the ways in
which local police themselves have reacted to the public outcry following perceived police
misconduct.

Anchored in the neighborhoods of Del Paso Heights and Meadow view, where Stephon Clark
was killed by police, the central characters profiled in the film include officers from the
Sacramento Police Department, Del Paso Heights Gang Unit, activists from the Sacramento
Black Lives Matters Movement, and community members. Below is the link to our prior work.
